On the <br />contrary, the measurements from the Middle Creek floodplain indicate <br />that flood irrigation provides high moisture content in the topsoil <br />and root zone. Therefore, there is no evidence of subirrigation in <br />the floodplains of Middle and Fish Creeks. <br />Infrared Color Photograph Analysis <br />A color infrared aerial photograph of the proposed permit and adjacent <br />area was supplied by the Office of Surface Mining in Denver, Colorado. <br />The photograph was taken in late summer on September 9, 1978. <br />Approximate scale of the photograph is 1:32,000. The photograph was <br />analyzed using visual interpretation techniques to detect features <br />which could indicate flood irrigation or sub-irrigation. A copy of <br />the photograph is provided in Figure 10, Color Infrared Aerial <br />Photograph. <br />Interpretive factors used in identifying features included the use of <br />• color, texture, location and stereoscopic examination for topographic <br />relief. Descriptions and locations of features have been made with <br />the photograph oriented so the photo number is positioned in the upper <br />right corner with the top of the photograph pointing north. <br />Color infrared reflectance (CIR) as recorded on this photograph <br />renders a unique color of surface features which differ greatly from <br />their natural color. A bright red color of CIR would show up on a <br />natural color photograph as rich green and represents grasses which <br />receive water from irrigation. Other red or orange color in the <br />infrared are naturally green in color but vary in plant vigor,. <br />photosynthetic activity, structure (trees, shrubs, grasses), or <br />species composition. The darker green colors in the infrared indicate <br />stands of sagebrush; the difference is due to the increase in the bare <br />ground interspaces in the sagebrush stand. Bare ground along with <br />yellowish-brown features or dry plant material has an infrared <br />reflectance of white. The white linear features are usually dirt <br /> <br />2.06-18 <br />
