The native vegetation is mainly shrubs <br />and grasses with scattered pinyon and juniper, Elevation is 6,800 to <br />7,700 feet. The average annual precipitation is 14 to 16 inches, the <br />average annual air temperature is 43 to 46 degrees F, and the average <br />frost-free period is 95 to 115 days. <br />This unit is about 75 percent Cathedral soil and 15 percent Rock <br />outcrop. Tha Cathedral soil and Rock outcrop are on side slopes and <br />ridges. The components of this unit era so intricately intermingled <br />that it was not Dractieal to map .them separately at the scale used. <br />Included in this unit is about 5 percent moderately deep soil <br />otherwise similar to the Cathedral soil. Also included is about 5 <br />percent Taeolots vary gravelly sandy loam on foot slopes and in <br />drainagaways. Small areas of talus are often present below Rock <br />outcrop. <br />The Cathedral soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in <br />colluvium and residuum derived dominantly from gneiss. Slope is 45 to <br />65 percent. Typically, the surface layer is grayish brown very <br />gravelly coarse sandy loam about 6 inches thick. Below this is a <br />layer of dark grayish brown extremely gravelly sandy loam about 9 <br />inches thick. The substratum is extremely gravelly sandy loam about 4 <br />inches thick over gneiss at a depth of 19 inches. The soil is neutral <br />to a depth of 15 inches and slightly acid below that depth. The <br />texture of the surface layer in soma areas is very cobbly sandy loam <br />or vary stony sandy loam. <br />Permeability of the Cathedral soil is rapid. Available water <br />capacity is vary low. Effective rooting daptn is 10 to 20 incne5. <br />Runoff is very rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is very h~gn. <br />i, <br />~~ <br />
