This <br />~- map unit is on very steep mountainsides and canyonsides. The na*.~ve <br />vegetation ie mainly fir. Elevation is 7,500 to 9,000 feet. The <br />average annual precipitation is 14 to 18 inches, the average annual <br />air temperature is 40 to 44 degrees F, and the average frost-free <br />period is 45 to 70 days. <br />This unit is about 45 percent Lakehelen soil and about 35 percent <br />Rock outcrop. Ths Lakehelen soil is on sid• slopes and Rock outcrop <br />is mainly on upper side slopes and ridges. <br />Included in this unit is about 10 percent deep l:oldcreek very <br />gravelly sandy loam on foot slopes and along drainageways. Also <br />included is about 10 percent shallow Wetmore very gravelly sandy loam <br />on ridges and short south-facing side slopes. Small areas of talus <br />' • are below cliffs consisting of bedrock. <br />~_ The Lakehelen soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed <br />in colluvium and residuum derived dominantly from gneiss and granite. <br />Slope is 45 to 70 percent. Typically, the surface is covered with a <br />mat of undecomposed fir litter about 1 inch thick over decomposed fir <br />litter about 2 inches thick. Th• surface layer is pale brown very <br />gravelly fine sandy loam about S inches thick aver light brown <br />extremely gravelly Bandy loam about 10 inches thick. The subsoil is <br />extremely gravelly loam about 8 inches thick. Fractured gneiss ~s at <br />a depth of 23 inches. Tha soil is neutral to a depth of 5 inches, <br />slightly acid to a depth of 15 inches, and neutral below that depth. <br />The texture of the surface layer in some areas is very stony sandy <br />loam. <br />~~ Permeability of the Lakehelen soil is moderate. Available water <br />capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth ~s 20 to 40 inches. <br />Runoff is very rapid, and the hazard of water erosion ~s very hir~h. <br />~75 <br />
