(hlssoila inforrnation is I~,r Slia
.. • ~ • specillc. Onsite investiEation,
Oesting and analysis by competent
personnel Is needed before construc• y ~ 89
tion or other engineering use of soils.
39--Granile, very gravelly sandy loam, 25 to 45 percent slopes.
this deep, well drained soil is on mountainsides. It formed ~n
residuum an colluvium derived dominantly from sandstone. The native
vegetation is mainly conifers. Elevation is 6,000 to 9,200 feet. The
average annual precipitation is 16 to 20 inches, the average annual
air temperature is 40 to 44 degrees F, and the average frost-free
period is 50 to 75 days.
Typically, th• aurfae• is covered with a mat of fir litter about 2
inches thick. The surface layer is dark grayish brown very gravelly
sandy loam about 2 inches thick. In a few areas the surface of the
soil is stony. Tha subsurface layer is mainly brown very gravelly
sandy loam about 17 inches thick. Th• subsoil is extremely gravelly
sandy clay loam to a depth of 60 inches or more. The soil is neutral
to a depth of 2 inches, strongly acid to a depth of 32 inches, and
~-- slightly acid below that depth. The texture of the surface layer in
some areas is very cobbly sandy loam.
Included in this unit is about 10 percent soils moderately deep to
sandstone or siltstons and otherwise similar to this Granile soil.
These soils era near ridges and on steeper, upper side slopes. Also
includes is about S percent sandstone rock outcrop on the ridges and
upper side •lopea.
Permeability of this Granile soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more.
Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is very high.
This unit is used for woodland, wildlife habitat, and recreation.
I
~, .
r,
/y~
