F. Recreation

Recreation potential within the ACEC is focused on interpretation
and information opportunities provided by the many, varied cultural
resources scattered throughout the area. Combined with the natural,
scenic beauty and ruggedness of the several canyons and mesas, these
resources provide a unique recreation environment for the public to
explore and enjoy. Additionally, three Wilderness Study Areas
(WSAs) - Cross Canyon, Ca hone Canyon, and Squaw/Papoose Canyon -
offer primitive and unconfined recreation opportunities.
Objectives for recreation include:
- maintaining developed recreation sites at Lowry and Dominguez-
Escalante Ruins for interpretation information opportunities,
picnicking, sight-seeing, photography, etc.
- coordinating new facility developments and existing facility
improvements with the AHC and SJRA to optimally meet the needs
and desires of that sector of the recreating public interested
in such facilities. Initial developments would probably
involve Sand/East Rock Canyons and Painted Hand Ruin, and
would include signs, register boxes, trails, parking, etc.
- continuing interim management of the WSAs to provide
opportunities for hiking, backpacking, camping, horseback
riding, photography, rock-climbing, etc., in primitive and
unconfined settings.
- maintaining a broad range of recreation settings and activities
in the ACEC, while preventing or reducing resource degradation
caused by recreation use, and providing for visitor health and
safety.
G. Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs)
Implementation steps for standard ORV designation include:
- publishing ORV brochures and maps, and preparing press releases
and other informational materials
- publishing the ORV designation order in the Federal Register
- distributing maps and brochures to the public
- installing and maintaining signs, compliance, etc.
Within the ACEC, the following ORV designations, as identified in
the San Juan-San Miguel RMP, will occur:
25
