~' <br />~ 1. Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitat <br />a. Proposed land treatment projects will be designed and <br />evaluated for provisions to retain adequate cover and <br />vegetation structural diversity to provide for game and <br />nongame species habitat requirements. <br />b, As funding becomes available, projects designed to improve <br />riparian habitats, develop water sources, and reestablish <br />or increase native vegetation on deteriorated range sites <br />will be implemented. <br />2. McElmo Research Natural Area <br />Management goals are: (1) to provide a natural and relative- <br />ly undisturbed setting for research of native herpetofauna and <br />to provide public educational opportunities; (2) to remove or <br />prevent resource activities that conflict with the primary <br />purpose of designation of the RYA; and (3) to improve ecolog- <br />ical site conditions to a minimum "goad" condition rating (SCS <br />Ecological Range Site condition racing) through intensive <br />livestock management and reestablishing native seed sources. <br />a, If possible, acquire through exchange adjacent private <br />land in W§NE~, Sec. 27, T. 35 N., R. 20 W., and include <br />this land within the RYA. <br />b. After a, above is accomplished, for logical management, <br />include those BLM lands below the canyon rim (E~NE~, Sec. <br />27, T. 35 N., R. 20 W.) in the RYA. <br />c. Construct boundary and/or gap fences to provide management <br />control. <br />d. Intensive livestock management within the RNA will be <br />initiated as soon as fence construction is comoleted. <br />Utilization levels will be held at light to moderate use. <br />D. Minerals <br />Management objectives are to allow fot mineral exploration and <br />development in a manner that will minimize conflicts with present <br />ACEC values and provide for reasonable site reclamation vithin ACEC <br />guidelines. Special mineral management concerns are focused on the <br />three Wilderness Study Areas and No Surface Occupancy leasing <br />restrictions to protect cultural resources. <br />1.
