• 3.11 Compaction and Testing
The Owner, through the Engineer, shall perform soil compaction, soil classification,
soil permeability, shear and cohesion, gradation determinations and other tests he
deems necessary for the proper control of construction. The Contractor shall
perform, or pay the cost of performance, all tests which are required to be run as a
result of a failure of his original construction or work. In addition, the Contractor
shall provide at his own expense the following tests:
A. Concrete Tests: See Section 03300 -Cast-in-Place Concrete.
B. All performance tests such as pipe line pressure tests for leakage, operation
of gates and other mechanical devices through design limits.
C. Retesting of all performance tests including both those originally paid for by
the Owner or the Contractor, all at his own expense.
D. Prior to the onset of construction the on-site borrow areas, areas of exca-
vation, off-site borrow pits or quarries, and stockpile areas shall be tested to
determine gradations, optimum moisture content, Standard Proctor Density
(ASM D698, AASHTO T-99), and the Atterberg Limits. After these tests
have been submitted to the Engineer, the Engineer will give written approval
or rejection of the materials.
~• E. Density tests performed on compacted soils to determine compliance with
these specifications shall be performed at the direction and expense of the
Owner. Nuclear Density Tests will be acceptable for homogeneous fill areas
if at least one Sand Cone Density Test is performed for every ten Nuclear
Density Tests. The Sand Cone Density Test must be taken adjacent to the
preceding Nuclear Density Test.
Classifications and compaction curves to be used with the Nuclear Density
Test shall be taken and submitted prior to construction. The classification
will also include a description of soil properties, including color, as well as
the information required under Part D of this section.
Copies of all tests performed by the Contractor shall be sent to the ARCO Project
Engineer.

02200-12
