• • Appendix C
~ivisionol Correspondence Only
' STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
' DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DATE: July 7, 1977
~0: Rex Taliaferro
ROM: Don Bogart
July 7, 1977, I checked the two gravel mines belonging to the Sterling Sand
' and Gravel Company of Fort Collins, Colorado. This operation is actually
one contiguous mining operation and is merely split by North Taft Hill Street.
Therefore, for the purposes of this report, they will be considered ens
' one unit.
This is considered as an old mine due to the fact that it has been mined
' far several years. Parts of it have been reclaimed as the gravel was removed.
The area was originally part of the flood plain of the Poudre River, parts of
i which were in farmland and parts of it in a natural riparian condition. 'lining
' has now occurred on both sides of the river and ponds exist in the extracted pits.
The reclamation work completed to date by Sterling has enhanced the wildlife
values of the property. The lake banks have been sloped 3:1 and top soil placed
and seeded. One pond has a very good trout fishery established and another
pond has a warm water fishery established. 7fie area has also been reclaimed
' to encourage waterfowl to use it, both far nesting and year .round habitat. This
~ has been accomplished by building a small island in one of the lakes ,end by
placing nesting structures strategically on the ponds. These have been used
' extensively .as evidenced by the young geese on the area.
The area is also used by many other species of waterfowl and shorebirds, as
well as small animals and song birds. The general impact on wildlife has
' primarily been for the good.
There are no known threatened or endangered species in the area.
' The mine will probably operate for about another fifteen years, with plans
for reclamation to continue in much the same way as in the past; namely, to
' enhance wildlife values.
DB:cc
1

u
