INTRODUCTION
•
Administration
This project was designed [o assess the extent and nature of
cultural resources contained within seven areas of potential impact
from development related to Atlantic Richfield Company's Mt. Gunnison
Mine ~ 1, Somerset, Colorado. The project was carried out for Atlantic
Richfield Company at the request of Lawrence G. Kline, Environmental
Scientist, Denver, Colorado.
The archaeological team included Mr. Robert E. Aurlbutt, Field
•
Supervisor for the project, and Mr. Douglas p. McFadden. Both were
employed by Fort Lewis College, and both have P`,aster of Arts degrees
in Anthropology and at Ieast 24 months experience in field archaeology.
Dr. Susan M. Applegarth, Fort Lewis College, had general responsibility
for the project and directly supervised laboratory operations and
report preparation.
The field work was completed in three phases due to unstable
I •
weather conditions in the study area; 1) October 27-30, 1975;
2) November 14-16, 1975; and 3) June 9-12, 1976. Analysis was
carried out i®ediately following each field period.
Nature of Development
The proposed development is to be conducted in two phases:
Phase I--the extraction of a bulk coal sample from the Sylvester
Gulch Adit (now completed); and Phase II--the construction of the
Mt. Gunnison Mine ~ 1 to include mine access routes, mine support
facilities, a coal preparation plant, and one or more dump sices
(construction to begin in about two years). Leveling will be
required to construct both mine access routes, adits, and their
4
