Section 815.15(c) Continued.
(ii) To the condition required for permanent roads under 30 CFR 816..150-
816.166, as appropriate.
Vehicular travel associated with exploration activities will be
confined to established roads at all times, except in cases where
no road is needed. In many instances, due to the scarcity of
ground cover, vehicles can be driven on natural land surface with
no resulting damage to the surface and with much less environmental
damage than would result from construction of a new road. In such
cases where no road is needed, vehicular travel will not be con-
fined to established roads.
Existing roads used for exploration in the area will be altered for
exploration purposes only insofar as they may be widened or smoothed
to accomodate exploration equipment and in accordance with all
• applicable Federal, State and local requirements. Water bars and
ditches will be added where appropriate. All existing roads to be
used during the exploration program will be left in a condition
equal to or better than their preexploration condition. No roads
will be significantly altered.
Because of the flat terrain and sparse ground cover, it is antici-
pated that only a minimal amount of road or bench construction will
be needed within the proposed permit boundary during any coal
exploration conducted in connection with this permit application.
Where a new road is needed, it will be utilized for less than six
months and thus will be constructed as a Class III road, according
to the provisions of 30 CFR 816.170-816.176.
Roads will be constructed parallel to topographic contours and on
the areas of least slope wherever possible. Roads will he located
to take advantage of natural clearings and other features in order
815-6
