The goals of revegetation are to comply with CMLRO performance Section
• 4.15.8 by establishing a vegetative cover (see Revegetation Monitoring Section
2.05.6) sufficient to control soil erosion which is capable of supporting a
well-managed use of the land by livestock and wildlife.
The general approach was to establish a grassland area for Mr. Eilts'
ranching operation with scattered shrubs for wildlife use. Specifically, areas
such as swale areas, which are expected to receive additional surface water,
were planted with grasses and shrubs with the capacity to reduce erosion. Plant
species were also selected to maximize grazing palatability while being tolerant
to intensive grazing use.
Establishment of Permanent Vegetation - Reclaimed Mine Area
Areas where topsoil was applied were geochemically tested, fertilized,
• drill-seeded, and, where necessary, broadcast with a seed mixture adapted to
that landform. Immediately after the area had been seeded, disturbed areas were
mulched. Mulch was applied on all disturbed mine areas at a rate of 1,000 to
1,500 lbs. of straw per acre and crimped into the soil. In some cases, tran-
sitional areas between landforms were planted according to operator judgment as
grading was completed. In addition to mulching, superphosphate fertilizers were
applied at a rate of 100 lbs. per acre. The four landform types and vegetative
specifications for each are as follows.
Swale areas occur along reshaped intermittent drainages and adjacent to
sediment ponds. When the temporary sediment ponds (Impoundment No. 1, lower
pond, and Impoundment No. 2, upper pond) are removed and regraded to the final
post-mining topography as shown on Map 20, the gently sloping areas previously
• occupied by ponds will also be re-established to this landform type. After top-
soil was applied to the scarified overburden surface, the area received broad-
- 321 - (Rev. 5/86)
