The site was revisited during the current project. A sandstone mano fragment was observed
in the two-track neaz the southeastern portion of the site. This is asingle-handed mano which
has been shaped to a size measuring 14cm x 9cm x 7cm thick with a small portion of a comer
broken off. There is a small area of surface pecking on one of the utilized large faces. The
eazlier reported micro-flake was not observed.
Dirt from three shovel probes and two badger back dirt piles in the area of deposition was
shifted through'/." screen (Figure 4). The depth of the probes varied from 35cm to 60cm
depending on their location. Probe #1 was placed neaz the toe edge and is the most shallow with
the bottom becoming extremely hazd and difficult to penetrate with a shovel. A probe on the side
slope (#2) and one neaz the crest (#3), of the deposition azea, were deeper and did not encounter.
hard dirt until approaching the level of the deflated surface. Two rounded river cobbles were
recovered from probe #2 which encountered hazd dirt at approximately 45cm. These had not
been altered in any fashion. Probe #3 was dug to 60cm and did not encounter hard soil, but it
was still about the lower level of probe #l. No cultural material was recovered from the shovel
probes or the back dirt piles.
Soil composition was very consistent between the probes. The upper 5-lOcm was a medium
brown sandy silt with a slight loamy texture. As the depth increased sandy silt with small gravels
was encountered. The lowest level was more clayey in composition and is extremely dry and
• hard.
The only artifact observed on the east side of the railroad during the current project was the
mano. There aze numerous badger back dirt piles scattered across the site, both in deflated
portions and areas of deposition, but no artifacts were observed in these areas. Since no
additional artifacts were recovered during this limited testing phase and the surface artifacts are
very Iimited, it is recommended that the site be evaluated as not eligible for the National
Register.
SRT2014 is a prehistoric isolated find consisting of a single white chert interior flake. This
artifact is on a southeast trending side slope of an unnamed ridge overlooking Fish Creek located
1.2 miles to the southeast. The location is on a small gently sloping area covered with native
vegetation consisting of sagebrush with mixed grasses and forbs.
SRT2015 is also a single white chert interior flake. This prehistoric isolate was found along
the northwest edge of the Fish Creek valley. Fish Creek is about a mile to the-southeast---
Theterrain slopes gently toward an unnamed intermittent tributary of Fish Creek. This
intermittent is approximately ] 000 ft to the southeast. Vegetation cover consisting of native
sagebrush mixed with grasses and forbs.
SRT2016 is a tested cobble of very granulaz white quartzite. There is cortex covering one
side and a couple flakes have been removed from the opposite side. The artifact is on the side
slope of a small knoll located between Fish Creek, 0.8 mile to the south, and an unnamed
