The presence of historic
properties was considered likely because of the occurrence of
the town of Cameo and the coal mine facilities in the
surrounding area.
Field Methods
A 100 percent pedestrian cultural resource survey of the
5-acre block was walked in contour transects spaced at no
greater than 15 meters. A total of about 5 acres was
intensively surveyed for cultural resources.
Cultural resources were sought as surface exposures and
were characterized as sites or isolated finds. Sites were
defined by the presence of six or more artifacts and/or
significant feature(s) indicative
Isolated finds were defined by the
artifacts apparently of surficial
encountered were to be recorded to
Colorado Preservation Office (CPO)
Society.
Study Findings/Recommendations
of patterned human activity.
presence of 1 to 5
nature. Two historic structures (5ME7020 and SME7021)
were recorded. Detailed information about these two resources
is provided in the forms found in the Appendix.
Site 5ME~020 is a cement walled structure that was once
used as a water storage facility for the town of Cameo. Its
interior dimensions are 46 feet long by 15 feet wide by 10
feet high. The walls are 14 inches thick. It has a pitched
roof and a new doorway on the south wall that was recently
added by Public Service Company. The walls were reenforced on
the exterior with buttresses, which have been removed on the
New 2/4/94
