}
Field Methods
A 100 percent pedestrian cultural resource survey of the
proposed mine portal area was made by walking a series of
east-west parallel transects spaced 15 meters to 25 meters and
covering a square area of about 10 acres. The associated
powerline route was walked in a zigzag transect covering a
corridor 200 feet wide. A total of about 48 acres was
intensively surveyed for cultural resources.
Cultural resources were sought as surface exposures and
were characterized as sites or isolated finds. Sites were
defined by the presence of six or more artifacts and/or
significant feature(s) indicative of patterned human activity.
Isolated finds were defined by the presence of 1 to 5
artifacts apparently of surficial nature. Cultural resources
encountered were to be recorded to standards set by the
Colorado Preservation Office (CPO) of the State Historical
Society.
Study Findings/Recommendations
As expected, cultural resources were encountered during
the survey. One historic mine site (5ME6868), a small,
prehistoric open campsite (5ME6869), and two isolated finds
(SME6870 and SME6871) were recorded. This section briefly
describes the finds and presents the field evaluations.
Detailed information is provided in the forms found in the
Appendix.
Site SME6868 is a historic coal mine operated between
1922 and 1967. It has operated under the name of the Winger
Mine and the Go Soy Mine. The previous owners include a Mr.
Clark, and Mr. A. Fontanari; it is presently owned by Pitkin
Iron Company. The mine is located at the head of a small
canyon at an elevation of 5060 feet. The site consists of two
buildings (a metal shop, and a metal/cinder-block office),
several piles of metal and wood debris, a pile of coal
tailings, a short mine cart track, and an open strip-mine
scar. Because it was operated until recent times and it is in
poor condition, the mine is field evaluated as not eligible
for listing on the NRHP.
Site SME6869 is a small lithic scatter that probably
represents a small open camp. It is located on the south rim
• of a narrow, steep canyon at an elevation of 5075 feet. The
.~ site is contained within an area approximately 30 meters by 15
meters and consists of 1 mano fragment, 2 cares, and 2 flakes.
5
(New 8-28-92)
