<br />• <br />• <br />Revised <br />October 16, 1981 <br />stockpiled in instances where insufficient regraded spoil is available <br />for soil reapplication. <br />Topsoil storage stockpiles for the permit area are shown on the Topsoil <br />Handling I•tap (Map 8), and the Mine Plan Map (Map 6). As can be seen, <br />topsoil and subsoil stockpiles will be constructed to handle material <br />which is in excess of current redistribution needs. This excess •soil <br />will come from mining boxcut areas, and from temporary overburden <br />stockpile locations. The planned contemporaneous stockpiling and <br />reapplication will eliminate the need to move topsoil stockpiles from <br />one area to another prior to reapplication onto graded spoil. Subsoil <br />material from all areas will be removed separately and placed into <br />separate, segregated storage stockpiles. <br />All proposed stockpiles will be located within stable portions of the <br />permit area where stockpiles will be protected from external effects of <br />both wind and water erosion. Stockpiles will also be placed to avoid <br />disturbances other than those incidental to their deposition and <br />removal. Signs will placed on each stockpile to prevent inadvertent <br />disturbance, unnecessary compaction, or contamination. <br />Wind erosion will be prevented from the piles by planting a rapidly <br />growing cereal grain species such as oats, rye, wheat, or barley, as <br />soon as conditions allow.• In addition to the planted material, a <br />considerable amount of volunteer growth can be expected to grow on all <br />stockpiled soils. If other wind erosion control methods fail, a straw <br />mulch will be applied onto the stockpiled topsoil using a mulch blower. <br />Water erosion that might occur on the soil stockpiles will also be <br />controlled by planting rapidly growing cereal grain species and the <br />volunteer plant growth. If these measures are unsuccessful in <br />controlling water erosion, then straw mulch will be applied using a <br />mulch blower. External erosion will be controlled through proper <br />location of the stockpiles. No soil stockpiles will be placed in a <br />drainage bottom where external erosion might propose a potential threat. <br />,~ 262 <br />
