SOIL SURVEY
chained or poa~ly drained soils that formed in alluvium.
'these soils are on terraces, Oond plnins,;uui dt:ainage-
ways, hluvntiou ranges from 9,800 to 5,600 fuel Slopes
are 0 to 1 percent. The native vegebrtiou is sedges,
bluegrass, timothy, and other water-tolerant grasses
and fortis. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 73
to 15 inches, mean annual air temperature rouges from
98° to 50° F, and the frost-free season ranges from
135 to 150 days.
In a representative profile the surface layer is gray
and grayish brown fine sandy loam about 30 inches
thick. The subsoil is light brownish gray fine sandy
loam about 30 inches thick.
Permeability is moderately rapid, and the available
water capacity is high. Reaction is moderately alkaline.
These soils are used mainly for hay and grazing, A
few areas are used for irrigated crops and pasture.
The A horizon ranges from fine sandy loam to smtdy
loam 20 to 90 inches thick. Thickness of the mollic
epipedon is 24 to 50 inches. Content of rock fragments
ranges from 0 to 15 percent. Reaction ranges from
mildly alkalino to moderately alkaline. Gravel is at a
depth of 90 to GO inches in some profiles.
This level soil is on law terraces and Hood plains.
Included with this soil in mapping are a few small
areas of soils that are more sloping. Also included are a
few areas of sails in which gravel is at a depth of less
than 90 inches, a few gravel bars, and a few small
areas of Loveland, Caruso, and Paoli sails,
Rmtaff is slow, and the hazard of erosion is slight.
If irrigated, this soil is suited to pasture and hay.
Barley, alfalfa, corn, and suy:ar beets can be firown if
the water table is lowered. The soil is also well suited
to pasture and native grasses. Capability unit IVw-
The Purner series consists of shallow, well drain
soils that formed in material weathered from reddi
brown sandstone. These soils are on uplands and a
underlain by sandstone at a depth of ]0 to 20 inch.
Elevation ranges from 5,800 to 6,900 feet. Slopes a
1 to 30 percent. The native vegetation is mainly bl
