The C horizon is fine sandy loam, sandy
loran, or light loam. Content of rock fragments, mostly
channery or larger, averages 35 to 70 percent. Reaction
ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline.
82-Pcndcrgraee•Rock outcrop cumplcx, 15 l0 25
perccut slopce. This complex consists of moderately
steep soils on uplands. It is about 50 percent Pender-
grass fine sandy loam and about 35 perccut hock out-
crop. Pendergrass line sandy loam is nem• the Lop of
side slopes and the less sloping areas near the base of
side slopes, attd Rock outcrop is steeper.
Included with this complex in mopping are about 15
percent areas of Miracle and Clergern soils. Also in-
cluded m'e some small areas of soils that :u•e similar to
the Pendergrass soil but in which bedrock is somewhat
deeper and vegetation is mixed cmtifers.
Runoff is rapid, and the haaard of erosion is severe.
This complex is suited to native grasses. Capability
unit VIIs-1, drylmul; Pendergrass soil in Rocky Loam
range site and Rock outcrop not assigned to a range
site; not assigned to a windbreak suitability group.
Plnala SCrtCS
The Pinata series consists of deep, well drained
soils that fm•med in material weathered from sandstone
and shale. These soils are at mountainsides and ridges.
Elevation ranges from 5,800 to G,500 feet. Slopes are
15 to 95 percent. The native vegetation is mainly
ponderosa pine and some juniper and oak brush. Mean
annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches,
mean annual air temperature ranges ft•om 4G° to 48°
F, and the frost-free season ranges from 120 to 135
days.
In a representative pt•ofile a 1-ittclr-thick layer of
organic material is on the surface. The surface layer
is dark brown stony sandy loam about 2 inches thick.
The subsurface layer is pinkish gray stmty light sandy
loam about 8 inches thick. The subsoil is reddish brown
stony clay about ]2 inches thick and yellowish red
stony clay loam about 20 inches thick. Below this is
hard sandstone.
Permeability is slow, and the available water ca-
pacity is medium. Reaction is neutral.

PABe3
45
These soils are used for rect•eation, building sites,
quan'y sites, and limited grazing.
Representative profile of Pinata stony sandy loam
in an area of Pinata-Rock outcrop complex, 15 to 45
percent slopes, in forest, about 1,500 feet west of the
center of sec. 39, T. 5 N., R. 70 W.:
01-1 inch to 0; partly decayed pine needles and
leaves.
Al-0 to 2 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 9/2)
stony sandy loam, very dark brown
(7.5YR 2/2) moist; weak medium sub-
angular blockv and weak fine gl:vtular
structure; soft, very friable; about 35
percent stones and gravel; neutral; clear
smooth bottdary.
A2-2 to 10 incites; pinkish gray (7.5YR G/2)
stony light sandy loam, dm•k brown
(7.~iYP. 4/2) moist; weak medium sub-
angular blocky structure; soft, very fri-
able; about 35 percent stones; neutral;
clear smooth boundary.
B2t-10 to 22 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4)
stony clay, reddish brown (5YR 4/4)
moist; moderate medium and coarse sub-
angular blocky structure; very hard,
very fu'm; thin nearly continuous clay
films olt peds; about 40 percent stones;
neutral; clear wavy boundary.
B3--22 to 92 inches; yellowish red (5XR 5/G)
stony clay loam, yellowish red (5YR
4/G) moist; weak medium subangular
blocky structure; very hat•d, firm; thin
patchy clay films on peds; about 95 per-
cent stones; neutral; gradual smooth
boundary.
R-42 to GO inches; hard sandstone.
The Al Itor•izott is sandy loam or heavy loamy sand
1 to 4 inches thick.
