• 4.07 SEALING OF DRILLED HOLES AND UNDERGROUND OPENINGS
4.07.1 General Requirements
Each exploration hole, or other borehole well, or other exposed
underground opening will be cased, sealed, plugged, or otherwise managed
to meet the requirements of this Section. Based on previous and
existing mining activities within the permit and adjacent areas, no acid
or other toxic drainage has been encountered. As will be demonstrated
in this Section, Sunbelt plans to minimize or eliminate disturbance to
the prevailing hydrologic balance by sealing of drill holes and other
underground openings. Likewise, the safety of people, livestock, fish
and wildlife, and machinery in the permit and adjacent areas will be
ensured to the extent possible by the temporary or permanent sealing
activities proposed by Sunbelt.
4.07.2 Temporary Sealing
•
Any mine entry, which is temporarily inactive, but has a future useful
life, will be protected by barricades or other covering devices, fenced,
and posted with signs to prevent access into the entry and to identify
the hazardous nature of the opening. These devices will be periodically
inspected and maintained in good operating condition by Sunbelt.
Sunbelt does not anticipate any exploratory surface drilling above the
Peacock Coal Mine. However, if drilling becomes necessary, each
exploration hole or other drill or borehole described in this Section
will be protected, inspected, and maintained according to this Section.
4.07.3 Permanent Seali
When no longer needed for mining operations, all entries or other
openings to the surface from the underground mine will be sealed and
backfilled. The permanent closure measures will be constructed to
n
4.07-1
