NATIONAL IiQNG COAL, LLC
NOTICE OF INTENT (NOI) TO CONDUCT COAL EXPLORATION
FOR LESS THAN 250 TONS
ATTACHMENT
PART II
2. This NOI has been submitted for the investigation of the pre-existing portals of the old
Barnwell Mine adjacent to the existing National King Mine. The investigation of the old
Bumwell Mine will allow National King Coal to determine if it is feasible to recover
additional coal resources adjacent to the Barnwell Mine. The investigation will also
allow evaluation of existing coal and roof and floor composition and conditions in the
adjacent Barnwell Mine, as well as verify the old mine workings maps.
3. National King Coal, LLC has a valid lease with Mr. Jack Wiltse, surface and mineral
owner, allowing right of entry and activities appurtenant to coal mining operations.
4. The exploration requested by this NOI involves removal of "bat" doors installed by the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology Inactive Mine Program, rehabilitating
(through reinforcing wall and roof of two portals and removing any obstructing gob
material to the approved National King Mine coal waste pile for safety reasons) the fast
1000 feet of the mine entry, surveying workings of the Barnwell Mine adjacent to the
National King Mine, and sampling any coal as appropriate.
The exploration will not involve surface disturbance in the sense of normal exploration.
The exploration will involve use of an existing mines portals. The Barnwell Mine portals
are located in the Gamble's Oak vegetation community (also known as mountain shrub)
on the northwest facing colluvial slope of Hay Gulch. Areas around the portals were
disturbed historically when the mine was in operation and were not subsequently
reclaimed. As such the area where the investigations will be conducted can be
characterized as disturbed land.
A copy of the 7.5-minute quadrangles comprising the area is attached with the location of
the proposed monitoring well identified.
Sa This project involves the opening of two portals of the old Barnwell Mine
immediately adjacent to the existing facilities area of the National King Mine
(immediately NE of the office). The "bat" doors will be removed, and the first 1000 feet
of each of the portals will be rehabilitated through removal of obstructing coal or roof
and floor material, reinforcement of roof and walls as necessary; with a combination of
timbers, re-mesh, and/or bolts. Underground machinery from the National King Mine
will be employed. During rehabilitation of the two portals, any obstructing coal, coat
waste, or roof or floor material will be removed and placed in the permitted National
King Mine coat waste pile. The Barnwell Mine workings will be surveyed and any coal
samples collected for analysis. When investigations are complete, the portals will be
resealed using the "bat" doors, to allow access to wildlife.
