~~~ 0~~
rm'irovnrmal tnrnnm and vneinrnt
•
Estimates of stockpiled topsoil volumes. The largest stockpile (Stockpile #2) occurs about
500 feet northeast of the loadout area. This stockpile is estimated to be abort[ 3 acres in
size and contain about 44,500 cubic yards of material. The volume estimate is based on a
6-foot depth on about 20 percent of the stockpile, and a 10-foot depth on 80 percent of the
stockpile.
The chazacteristics of topsoil in Stockpile #2 mere examined at the three locations shown
on Exhibit 9-1. Soil samples were collected from Stop 23 at two depths-3 to 5 feet, and
5 to 6.5 feet. Topsoil quality is good. SAR and EC values aze low. Both soil samples
had a silty clay loam texture. Carbonates are slightly elevated, ranging from 8 to 12
percent in the two samples.
The next largest stockpile (Stockpile #1) occurs southwest of the rail loop near the
intersection of the HG-1 haul road and Routt County road 53. The stockpile is estimated
to be 50 feet wide and 325 feet long with an average depth of 4 feet. Using these
estimates, about 2,400 cubic yards of soil material is stockpiled. The characteristics of
topsoil in Stockpile #1 were examined at three locations as shown on Exhibit 9-I. Soil
• samples were collected from Stop 27 at two depths-1 to 3 feet, and 3 to 5 feet. Topsoil
quality is good to a depth of 3 feet. The 3- to 5-foot increment had elevated sodicity and
salinity levels.
The third stockpile (Stockpile #3) is located about 1,500 feet northwest of the loadout
area. This stockpile is estimated to be 210 feet wide and 350 feet long with an average
depth of 3 feet. Using these estimates, about 8,200 cubic yards of soil tuaterittl is
stockpiled. The characteristics of topsoil in Stockpile #3 were examined at two locations
as shown on Exhibit 9-1. Soil samples were collected from Stop 31 at two depths-0 to 2
feet, and 2 to 3.5 feet. Tepsoil quality is good in the 0- to 2-foot increment. Carbonates
are high (25%) in the 2- to 3.5-foot increment. Textures are silty clay loams and silty
clays.
Topsoil tlrickrress on the railroad embankment. Topsoil material occurs at all locations
examined except for a steep cut slope northwest of the loadout area. Two types of topsoil
material are present. A sandy loam material with about 30 to 40 percent gravels and
cobbles occurs on the upper portions of the embankments near the actual rail line. This
material also occurs at Stops lE, 1W, 2E, and 2W on the railroad embankment north of
the irrigation ditch. On a13 other areas, the embankment and cut slopes are covered ~vi[]t a
-3-
