SITE
Irttroductlon
A topsoil evaluation of the Hayden Gulch Terminal, Inc. site was completed in November,
1992. The objectives of the evaluation were to-
• estimate the quantity of suitable material in three topsoil
stockpiles located within the permit azea;
• assess physical and chemical characteristics of the stockpiled
soils;
• determine the thickness of topsoil on the railroad embankment
and any associated cut slopes;
• verify the soil types delineated by the Soil Conservation
Service (SCS) inside the rail loop; and
• assess physical and chemical chazacteristics of the undisturbed
• soils.
Methods
Estimates of stockpiled topsoil volumes. Three potential topsoil stockpiles were delineated
by Peabody on black-and-white or color aerial photographs. Two stockpiles occur inside
the rail loop, and the other stockpile is located southwest of the rail loop along the HG-1
haul road. In each stockpiled area, hand-angered soil borings were used to determine the
thickness of the stockpiled soil material and to assess its physical characteristics.
Stockpiled soil was examined at eight locations. Thickness and physical chazacteristics of
the topsoil were recorded on field note forms (see Appendix B).
Topsoil rl:ickness on t/re railroad embankment. Color aerial photographs at a scale of
about 1:12,000 and black-and-white photographs at a scale of 1:6,666 were used as base
maps for examining soils on the railroad embankment and any associated cut slopes. In
the field, the topsoil thickness on the railroad embankment and associated cut slopes were
examined at twenty-two locations. Thickness and physical characteristics of the topsoil
and underlying material were recorded on field note forms (see Appendix B).
Verificntiorr of SCS mopping. The SCS completed an Order 2 soils survey of the site
• prior to disturbance. Two map units (SA and 7C) were delineated in the rail loop area.
