1. Weed and seed free grass hey or grain straw should he used <br /> an application rate of 4,000 lbs./ac. of air dry m:tteria.. <br /> At least 50% of the mulch by weight shall be 10 incites <br /> or more in length. Anchor mulch immediately after <br /> distributing with mulch crimper (straight disc ). <br /> 2. Application of feedlot or barnyard manure must be of <br /> a type that has 60% or more, by weight, heavy chunks <br /> 5 inches or more in diameter. The minimum, rate of <br /> application shall be 30 tons per acre imc,odiately before <br /> or after seeding. <br /> 3. Mulch netting. Netting must be firmly held in place <br /> with pins spaced not more than 10 linear feet apart. <br /> In sandy or extremely loose soil locate pins closer. <br /> 4. Asphalt <br /> 5. lute Netting <br /> 6. Excelsior mat <br /> 7. Wood Chips <br /> 5. Defer seeded area from all use by livestock for at least a two <br /> year period or until grass is established. This may require fencing <br /> of the critical area. <br /> Seedbed Preperation for Very Steep Slopes <br /> 1. Cut ridges, diversions or channels across slope to catch <br /> excessive water on slope and divert it off of disturbed area. <br /> Spacing of these will depend on degree of slope and in- <br /> tensity of rain. The steeper the slope, the greater the in- <br /> tensity of rains the closer the ridges, diversions or channels. <br /> Broadcast seed and drag, spike tooth harrow, chain logs, any- <br /> thing that will scarify soil and cover seed with some soil. <br /> 2. Run bulldozer with tracks up and down slope. The track will <br /> leave depressions perpendicular to the slope. These de- <br /> pressions will catch the seed that is broadcast, hold any <br /> precipitation on the slope and help control the movement of <br /> soil off the distuubed area. Broadcast seed before equio- <br /> ment goes over area for this final operation. The move:,cnt <br /> of the equipment will tend to cover seed with soil. <br /> 3. Leave area without the final smoothing operation. leave the <br /> surface rough with ridges and depressions. This will slow <br /> the runoff down to allow it to percolate into soil and reduce <br /> erosion. Broadcast seed and drag, spike tooth harrow, chr:in <br /> logs, anything that will scarify soil and cover seed with some <br /> z soil. <br /> If site is to extreme for these practices broadcast seed over <br /> area and cover with mulch or n,t will be needed. Composted wood chips <br /> mulch is very well suited for mountain sites, since a supply of <br /> chips is readily available in these areas. These will help re- <br /> duce erosion and loss of soil moisture through evaporation. <br />
