P.EVEG TATION Gl1IDELIN`:S
I. After earth disturbance operations the following steps are needed:
A. Side slopes should be flatter than 1:1. Slopes of 6:1 or
flatter are much more desirable for greater success in
re-establishment of vegetation and operation of equipment.
B. Excess water from adjacent areas should not be allowed to
flow onto the area unless erosion control ornctices are
implemented.
C. Length of slope should be properly controlled to prevent
erosion.
D. Topsoil is needed on sites having exposed soil surfaces
low in organic material and texture classification rf
clay loan or heavier. This need increases significantly
if the soils are inherently dry, if the slopes are
greater than 6:1 and if the slope aspect is south or
southwest. Topsoil should be applied after shaping and tilled
to a depth of 6 inches binding tonscil to existing soil.
2. Fertilization
A. Fertilizer of not less than 40 lbs. nitrogen and 4,) lbs.
phosphorous should be applied unless a soil analysis indi^nter
sufficient amounts of these elements. Application of
fertilizers should be immediately prior to or at the time
of seeding.
3. Seedbed Preperation
A. The seedbed should be prepared Prior to see(iina ; spe seecinr
recommendations). If' the :irer is to be left b,,r(- 1'.)r 1on17sr
than a few months, a temporary cover should be est,tbliche,.i.
B. All rocks, trash and other debris that will. interfere .:ith
seeding should be removed. Till the ground tc a denth of
4 to 6 inches. If the seedbed is prepared iT.cediatei;;
following construction this operation can usually be ur.itted,
except on fresh cut areas that have not otherwise been
disturbed. Apply fertilizer, seed and mulch, if
4. Mulching
A. A mulch may be needed to conserve moisture, prevent
crusting, reduce runoff and erosion and help ectnblish
a plant cover.
B. Mulching material should be applied inredi, tcla
after seeding.
C. Either one of the mulching neth.,dr listed be Low v:ouid b
acceptable.
