Although the mining operations will utilize approximately 6,000 ac-
ft annually, recycling will ac~~ount for over 950 of the necessary
water. If the definition of consumptive use er.cludes water lost to
the hydrologic basin, then when we evaluate the 295 ac-ft of
circuit losses, there may be recharge to water-bearing Zones of
nearly 115 acre-feet or an effective consumptive use of only 180
acre-feet. Water lost to the hydrologic basin would most likely
occur underground in both the refuse area in active mine workings.
A two inch T/C (thread and coupling) steel water line has been
installed between the point of diversion along the Colorado River
• and the water storage tank adj.3cent to Portal pad No. 1, via the
pump house located immediatel}~ north of the sedimentation pond
(Figure 4.2-3). At the point of conversion, the submerged end of
the 2" water line will be equipped with a "foot-valve" or check-
valve. The pump in the pumphouse will be an electrically driven
self priming centrifugal pump properly engineered and sized to pump
the required make-up water from the river to the water tank near
the portal. The pump will be a 7-1(2 hp Cornell 1-1/9-inch, 3
phase, 990 volt pump, which is capable of pumping 55 gpm at 295
feet of head, or a pump of equivalent capacity.
Pumps of this type are commercially available and the ultimate
manufacturer will be selected by the engineering and design
subcontractor. Since the primary drive is an electric motor and
housed in the existing pumptlouse, the noise level will be
undiscernible. Start and stop will be by a hand activated switch
