GENERAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
• PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION
Blue Ribbon Coal Company operates the Blue Ribbon mine near
Paonia, Colorado. Plan location of the site is shown on Figure
1. The mine was acquired in 1981 and has approximately five
years remaining life. An intricate part of this operation is the
mine access or portal to the underground operations. Portal
access and support facilities are located on a bench cut. The
bench cut consists of a forward bench fill sloping up from
Hubbard Creek which daylights onto the main bench. The main
bench is approximately 150 to 160 feet wide which has been cut
into the existing slope creating a steeply sloping highwall
section above the portal facilities.
• The Forward bench fill has been reported to be unstable and the
steeply sloped highwall has experienced limited instability and
~ ravelling of the rock face above the portal facilities.
SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION
Rocky Mountain Geotechnical was requested by Blue Ribbon Coal
Company to conduct site investigations of the existing bench cut.
The investigations were to determine the stability of the
existing operational conditions and to determine reclaimed slopes
to satisfy the requirements of the Mine Land Reclamation Board of
Colorado.
This report contains the results and recommendations of the study
performed by Rocky Mountain Geotechnical and includes information
• contained in a previous interim report dated December 31, 1981.
i
1
