Maximizing <br />• coal production while minimizing unnecessary costs are items that both <br />the government and the Bear Coal Company are concerned with during these <br />times of high inflation and high energy shortages. The Bear Coal <br />Company will be mining to maximize the recovery utilizing the most <br />current, appropriate, engineering technology available today. <br />Safety <br />The Bear Coal Company regards mine safety as one of the highest <br />priorities of the operation. High coal production cannot be achieved <br />without excellence in safety. <br />In the 47-year history of Bear Coal Company, there have only been two <br />fatalities associated with the mine. Since 1959, when Bill Bear became <br />General Manager, there have been no fatalities and only one Mine Safety <br />and Health Administration ("MSHA") closure occurring in 1977 due to a <br />lack-of-automatic couplers on the coal cars. <br />• <br />The Bear Coal Company has received many local, state, and national <br />honors for safety. These include the Holmes Safety Award and three <br />awards for having the lowest accident rate for Colorado coal mines. <br />Reclamation <br />The Bear Coal Company is likewise concerned about the protection and <br />preservation of land resources from which the coal mining will occur. <br />Because of the substantial investment and commitment to the land assets, <br />Bear Coal Company has a vested interest in the results of reclamation. <br />The Bear Coal Company is not only concerned with preserving land values, <br />but is also committed to improving their usefulness and aesthetic <br />values. <br />Although the area has been disturbed by. past operations, the Bear Coal <br />Company has regarded the reclamation program as extremely important in <br /> <br />10 <br />
