• Arkansas Archeological Survey, September 1972 - August 1974
As a survey archeologist, I was responsible for operation
of the Survey's local office in Monticello, Arkansas.
Duties included surveying and excavating in proposed state
and federal project areas, investigating and recording
reported sites, working with amateur archeologists, and
giving lectures to interested civic groups and school
classes. The position also included a joint appointment
on the faculty of the University of Arkansas at Monticello
where I taught two courses during the spring semester.
During October and November of 1972, with a crew of six, I
directed the testing of seven sites in a proposed wildlife
refuge and the survey of portions of the refuge that had
not yet been surveyed. In October and November of 1973,
again with a crew of six, I excavated a site on the lower
Quachita River, with occupations ranging from Early Archaic
to the Historic period. I was also engaged in a study cor-
relating site locations with soil types and other parameters
that may influence settlement patterns in this part of
the state.
PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS:
Areal
• Prehistory of Mesoamerica, the Southeastern U.S., and the
Middle East.
Ethnography and ethnology of Mesoamerica, the American
Southwest, and the Pacific (esp. Highland New Guinea).
Theoretical
Locational analysis of prehistoric sites.
Functional artifact analysis and intrasite artifact
distributions.
The development of agricultural societies and civilizations
in Mesoamerica and the Middle East.
The relation between cultural forms and environmental
adaptations.
Ethno-archeology -- I am planning a project in Western
Guatemala concerning use and discard patterns of material
culture.
OTHER EYPERIENCE:
I spent two summers, 1960 and 1961, as an Interpretative Ranger
at Mesa Verde National Park.
• MILITARY SERVICE:
Served in the L'.S. Army from 1962 to 1965 with the Signal
~ Corps and received an honorable discharge.
