Concentration 1 was found near the top
of the saddle, while Concentration 2 consisted of a large number of tools and flakes
eroding out of the west side of the saddle. Tools included 1 biface, 3 biface frag-
ments, 2 scrapers, and 12 utilized flakes.
DIAGNOSTIC ARTIFACTS
None
EVALUATION
This site seems to have served as a tool manufacturing station and, in light of the
large number of tools and flakes eroding out of the west side of the saddle, prob-
ably contains a significant amount of buried material. Because of this apparent
depth of occupation, site 5MF680 has potential for greatly increasing our knowl-
edge of the prehistory of the Craig area, an area for which prehistoric culture
processes and affinities are not yet well understood, and should therefore be
considered for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Since the
site is well out of the way of the proposed development, construction of the Wise
Hill No. 6 and Wise Hill No. 7 mines, no action concerning SMF680 need be taken
by Empire Energy Corporation at this time except to make every effort to avoid any
inadvertant damage to the site and to notify the BLM district archaeologist in
Craig immediately should any future development endanger the site.
