The proposed seismic line 9903 crossed northeast to southwest through the approximate
center of the site. To avoid the site, a deviation of the seismic line was surveyed across the slope
above the site to the north. The deviation is located more than 100 feet from the site which will
adequately protect the site from impacts due to seismic activity. All travel along the centerline
will be restricted to a 50 foot wide corridor on either side of the staked centerline. No driving
will take place outside this corridor along the deviation except on the existing bladed road that is
located directly above the deviation and crosses. All angering of shot holes will be confined to
the staked centerline.
SRT1370: This site is a lithic scatter located on a terrace north of an east-flowing intermittent
tributary of Fish Creek. The site extends from the base ridge slope to the edge of the north bank
of the drainage. It is bounded on the east and west by seasonal tributary drainages. The terrace is
relatively flat with microtopography of undulating swells that gently slope toward the creek. The
deposits consist of alight yellowish-brown sand with a darker brown sand that underlying it.
The depth of deposits is unknown but they appear to exceed 1.5 meters. The vegetation is thick
and dominated by tall sagebrush and includes rabbitbrush, bitterbrush, lupine, yarrow, grasses,
and other forbs. Most of the artifacts were observed in eroded areas, cattle paths, and rodent
backdirt piles.
The artifacts on the site consist of lithic debitage, two chipped stone tools, and a piece of
groundstone. There is one small concentration of flakes, mostly small biface thinning flakes and
pressure flakes. The materials in the concentration include chert, quartzite, and one quartz flake.
A small piece of burned bone was observed in this concentration. Over the rest of the site, the
flakes aze very thinly distributed and are dominated by tertiary chert flakes, mostly biface
thinning flakes. Several quartzite flakes, mostly tertiary, were also noted. Chert colors include
white, brown, tan, pink, banded tan and brown, speckled gray, and a translucent white. Quartzite
colors aze white, gray, and red. Two chipped stone tools consist of a biface and a utilized flake.
The biface is a fragment made from white quartzite. The utilized flake is a large chert flake that
appears to have been used as a scraper. The groundstone is a unifacially pecked and ground,
thick, sandstone slab.
The artifact assemblage on this site is relatively small, but there is one concentration
possibly representing an activity area, and several tools including groundstone. There is
excellent potential for buried deposits as this site is associated with low energy alluvia] deposits
with few impacts observed on the surface. In addition, there are good indications that it contains
additional subsurface cultural remains. The site is therefore recommended to be potentially
eligible for inclusion on the National Register. It is recommended it be avoided.
The proposed seismic line 9903 crosses northeast to southwest through the south end of
the site and the artifact concentration. The site was avoided by a deviation of the seismic line
approximately 70 feet to the west down the seasonal drainage that separates it from site SRT512.
The centerline of the deviation is located on the west side of the drainage for most of its extent.
The 70 foot buffer is sufficient to protect the site from impacts due to the seismic activity.
