As covered in much detail in Section
2.05.3, the method by which GEC Minerals, Inc. mines the coal
within the permit area is by open pit method. The overburden
material from five (5) different benches, one per seam is
backfilled into the mined out pit immediately behind the active
pit area. Overburden material and interburden material from
the initial cut in each area is placed in a temporary stockpile
to be used as backfill material for the final pit during the
later part of 1982 and 1985 as shown on the Mine Plan Map No. 15.
Rough grading of the backfill material occurs once the anticipated
final elevation of the dump has been reached. Grading to approximate
original contour is accomplished utilizing crawler tractors.
Normally, this grading procedure occurs approximately 600 to 800
feet immediately behind the active dump. Once the final pit area
has been excavated, overburden and interburden material from the
temporary overburden stockpile will be hauled to the final pit for
• backfilling. It is expected that this operation will occur in
1986 immediately after all coal in the final pit has been removed.
2.05-24
