The schedule for redistribution for topsoil and subsoil is also
included in these two Tables.
All volume and area figures have been based on the assumption that
soil material will be removed in advance of mining activities as
shown on the Topsoil Handling Map, No. 19. This procedure is
currently being used at the GEC Minerals, Inc, mine.
Volume computations are based on thicknesses determined from soil
surveys within the area and actual sampling sites as shown on the
Soils Map No. 11.
Topsoil and subsoil removal during 1981 will continue far each new
cut that is to be mined during that year. Prior to the opening of
the new cut towards the East side of the mine area in 1982, topsoil
will be removed and stockpiled near the West boundary for later
• distribution on the final backfilled pit area. Topsoil and subsoil
will only be stockpiled separately when no regraded areas are
available for redistribution. Subsoil and topsoil within stockpiles
will be utilized during the final years of mining to be spread on
final pit areas which have been backfilled and graded.
Topsoil and subsoil stockpiles have been specifically sited to
avoid wind and water erosion, additional compaction or contami-
nation. In addition, all stockpiles are located within relatively
flat, stable areas adjacent to the area to be mined. Each stock-
pile will be seeded with a rapidly growing cereal grain such as
oats, rye, wheat or barley as soon as conditions allow or with
other rapidly growing other annual species. If topsoil or subsoil
is stockpiled during a time not ameanable to revegetation, it will
be mulched to deter wind and water erosion.
Stockpiles will be identified with topsoil and subsoil signs.
Signs will be made in accordance to Performance Standards 4.05.
•
2.05-15
