I RULE 2.05 OPERATION AND RECLAMATION PLANS
2.05.1 Objectives
The comprehensive and detailed information on the planned mining
operation at the GEC Minerals mine are provided within this
section to ensure that the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
is provided with detailed information in order that this operation
be conducted in compliance with the Colorado Surface Coal Mining
Reclamation Act of 1973, as amended.
2.05.2 Operation Plan - Mine Plan Area
GEC utilizes an open pit type mining method wherein five (5)
active benches, one on each seam, are utilized to remove the coal
and overburden for that seam. Overburden is hauled from the active
• bench to the backfill area which has already been mined. Within
this operation overburden is drilled and blasted prior to loading.
A hydraulic shovel and front end loaders are used load the
overburden into end dump trucks for haulage to the overburden
dump or backfill area. Coal is ripped with crawler tractors
and loaded by front end loaders into end dump trucks for haulage
to the tipple area.
Extra care is taken to be sure that all coal is cleaned prior to
ripping and loading. In addition, no ribs or fenders are left in
an attempt to recover as much coal as possible. Areas exist where
the coal seams have been mined by underground methods. GEC Minerals
Inc. currently attempts to recover as much of the pillars within the
abandoned underground mines as possible to maximize the overall
recovery of the coal resource.
For purposes of this permit application, the area to be mined
• during the next five years is synomymous with the permit area.
However, GEC Minerals does plan to continue mining in adjacent
areas after 1985.
