Background
• Since 1978, Snowmass Coal Company has owned and operated two coal mines and
one coal preparation plant on North Thompson Creek. Snowmass Coal Company en-
listed the help of Gibbs and Hill, Environmental Consultants, to develop and
implement a permit application to mine coal for the Colorado Mined Land Reclama-
tion Division. Asa result of this permit application, a very detailed site
drainage plan is to control storm runoff and possible spills of materials that
could be detrimental to the quality of water in North Thompson Creek and the
environment surrounding the mine site.
North Thompson Creek joins with Middle Thompson Creek approximately one mile
downstream from the mine property. Together these creeks form Thompson Creek
which is a tributary to the Crystal River. There are no downstream users of this
water located within five miles of the mine site.
Site Drainage
• Maps D-4-5, D-4-6, D-4-7 and D-4-8 are maps prepared by a professional en-
gineer for Snowmass Coal Company. These maps show the site drainage for the mine
site. All ponds and culverts have been constructed according to the approved
design. In addition, all ponds have been certified as being properly constructed
by a Professional Engineer.
Stored Materials
The only materials stored at the mine site which pose a possibility of spil-
ling in large quantities is four 6,000 gallon diesel tanks, and one 20,000 gallon
diesel tank. The location of these tanks is shown on maps D-4-7 and D-4-8. In
the last three years there has been no spills of any materials at the mine site.
•
