State Req.
2.04.3 SITE DE=SCRIPTION AND LAND USE
The kinds of land use Drees which currently exist on the proposed
Seneca II permit area are:
Previous Mine Disturbance (1,160 acres) December I, 1980
Previous Mine Reclamation (406 acres) December I, 1980
Rangeland Shrub (2,213 acres)
Naturally Barren Area (1.17 acres)
Acres to be Revegetated = 756 acres, December I, 1980
The area of rangeland shrub includes the Mixed Brush, Aspen (Mixed
Brush ;subtype), and Upland Sagebrush Vegetation Types. It has been
historically used by sheep and, more recently, by cattle. Big game
mammals, a variety of birds, herptiles, small mammals, and invertibrates
also inhabit the site. Some of the shrub cover (particularly oakbrush)
may be attributed in part to s combination of man's control of fire and
heavy grass and forb utilization by domestic livestock. Therefore, •
historically land which has been mined in this area has been returned
primarily to plant species which are oriented to livestock grazing. Shrub
and tree species hove been included at a density to allow diverse
utilization by wildlife on the reclaimed areas. As seen in Tab 13,
Postmining Land Use, Seneca Coals, Limited will remain consistent with
the past permitted practice of maximizing rangeland razin .
Agropyron (Whestgrass), Bromus (Brome), Poa (bluegrass), and Stipa
(Needlegrass) were the main grass genera which occurs on the Rangeland
shrub land use type. Forb and shrub species which have been found
include Achilles (Yarrow), Artemisia (Sagebrush), E3alsamorhiza
(Balsamroot), Delphinium (Larkspur), Melilotus (Sweet clover),
Penstemon (Penstem), Senecio (Broundsel), Taraxacum officinale
(Common dandelion), Wyethia armplexicsulis (Mulesear wyethia),
Chrysothamnus (Rabbitbrush), Prunus (Chokecherry), Purshia
(Bitterbrush), Quercus ag mbeli (Gambel oak), Rosa (Rose), •
Symphoricarpos (Snowberry), Po ulus tremulodes (Quaking aspen), and
Pseudotsuga menziesu (Common Douglas fir).
4-2
