All existing soils and related discipline information for <br /> <br /> the study area was compiled, reviewed, and evaluated prior to initiation of field work. <br /> An Order 2/3 soil survey is currently being performed by the USDA Soil Conservation <br /> Service Craig Field Office for Routt County. A copy of the existing SCS maps covering the <br /> study area, official soil series "Form 232" descriptions, "Form 5" soil interpretation <br />• records, map unit descriptions, and all range site information, were obtained and <br /> reviewed. <br />Field Mapping (Order 1). The study area was first examined in a reconnaissance manner to <br />familiarize the field soil scientist with the area. Following the low intensity <br />orientation survey, a high intensity soil survey at 1":400' scale was conducted over the <br />entire study area (approximately 220 acres). <br />Soil profiles were excavated as necessary to determine the nature and extent of soils <br />present on the study area. Pits were hand-dug to depths of about 25 inches, to a <br />paral ithic contact, or bedrock, whichever was shallower. In general, this was sufficient <br />to expose the genetic horizons and some of the substrata. Below the 25 inch depth, the <br />i <br />soils were examined by means of a three-inch diameter hand auger to 72 inches or to a <br />paralithic contact or bedrock, whichever was shallower. Each soil profile was <br />characterized and then correlated with available SCS soil series criteria.
