Vegetation. The baseline vegetation survey for the study area is presented in Tab 10, •
Addendum 10-1. Five dominant vegetation types; mixed brush, upland sagebrush, aspen,
mountain meadow, and conifer occur within the study area. The mixed brush type occurs
dominantly on The very steeply sloping sandstone bedrock controlled si deslopes in the
northwestern and eastern portions of the study area. Upland sagebrush comprises most of
the shale bedrock/outcrop areas. Aspen communities occur on the northern aspect of deeply
incised steeply sloping ephemeral drainages. A stand of sub-alpine fir occurs nn the very
steeply sloping, north-facing si deslope in the northeastern part of the study area.
Mountain meadow communities are present on the two dominant ephemeral drainages which have
shallow to moderately deep ground water levels.
Methodology
Tasks performed to accomplish project objectives included:
o review of existing soils information
o detailed field mapping of soils (Order 1)
o soil sampling and profile description of all dominant soils rvithin the projected •
disturbance area
o evaluation of soils for reclamation potential
The methodology used during the soil survey followed standard techniques and procedures of
the National Cooperative Soil Survey as outlined in SCS (1975), SCS (1980), SCS (1981),
SCS (1982), and Fosberg and Falen (1983), USDA-SCS (1971), and Soil Survey Staff (1987).
The design of the survey was based on CMLRD rules 2.04.9, 2.04.12, and 2.06.6, statute
[34-33-110(2)(q) CSCMRA ), and consultation, as welt as PCC soil survey specifications.
The proposed soil survey program was reviewed on June 22, 1987 by Mr. Peter O'Connor and
Mr. Steve Renner, CMLRD reclamation specialists and lead persons responsible for review of
the soil survey baseline study. PCC's (Mr. Gary Wendt) July 2, 1987 letter to CMLRD (Mr.
Steve Renner) summarizes the discussions and mutual agreements of the June 22 meeting.
The soil survey study area for the Seneca II Mine East Wadge Extension area is as follows:

9-6-7 Revised 05/16/88
