~~

6
the importance of the site, (referring to
' habitat). What does Southdown intend to
' do about such a loss, in the case of
mining or a future reservoir?
Page 33-Comment: Paragraph 3 states-"Sensitive wildlife-
related issues associated with the project
area i.nclude...potential destruction of
raptor nest trees, and general loss of
wildlife habitat." We find this an
unacceptable result of dam and reservoir
construction.
Page 33-Comment: Paragraph 6 states-"the preliminary dam
embankment design would remove
approximately 50$ of the currently
occupied prairie dog habitat." We are not
comfoz•table with this result, given the
importance of the site in relation to
wintering raptors.
Comments and Questions Regarding Site Specific
Development Documents
In 1987, 3,142 active prairie dog burrows were found in Dowe
Flats, occupying 869 acres. This research was updated in
1991. At this time, the town had increased from 869 acres to
1,547 acres. We feel that this site is becoming an
increasingly important feeding site for raptors in Boulder
County. And yet.....
Pace 4~ oaragraph 5 states that a minimum of only 30$ of the
affected prairie dog habitat will be restored to similar
habitat in the reclamation plans.
Paae 7~ section 7.8.2 states that noise and vibration from
blasting will be significant enough to affect humans, even
outside of the mine permit area. One can only assume then
that the noise and vibration from blasting will affect
raptors and wildlife inside the mine permit area to an even
greater extent, as it includes their current habitat.
Paoe 39~ paraoraQh 4 warns of the "potential destruction of
raptor nest trees" during the mining process.
