STATE OF COLORADO • •
Ray Romer, Governor REFER TO
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION POF WILDLIFE o~L~~o
Pent' D. The lower section where
mining will occur firs is comprised of some native grasses including needle
and thread, blue grama, and red thr=_~-awn, Tr,is pJrtlon cf the sits also iias
been. grazed in the past years and has some knapweed on the sits. Thee upper
portion of the site is rolling hills with mountain mahogany and oak brash.
Wildlife species currently using the site ir:clude mule deer, meadow larks,
mountain lions, ground nesting birds, reptiles, and various small mammals.
According to Wayne, there will be little to nD mining on the upper portions of
this site. If this is correct, then there will be few negative impacts to
wildlife throughout the site. This is especially true, if there are no
impacts to Mellon Gulch, which runs along the southern border of the site and
is very diverse in terms of both plants and wildlife. However, if mining does
occur in either the upper portion or along Mellon Gulch, then significant
impacts to wildlife will occur.
Reclamation of this site should include the reestablishment of native prairie
plant species. These species should be consistent with the surrounding
vegetation and provide the necessary diversity required to sustain prairie
wildlife species. My office can provide informztion on native species of
plants and their various benefits to wildlife if requested.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this proposal.
