Coulson Excavating Company, Inc. -Stroh Gravel Pit
Exhibit D -Mining Plan
Background and Procedure
Mining operations will follow standazd gravel pit mining procedures and will not require
explosives to loosen the gravel.
The effective pit azea is approximately 70 acres. An 8 inch gas pipeline owned by Kaneb
Pipeline Co. (Kaneb) runs through the center of the permit area (See Exhibit C) and
excavation has been set back 50 ft from the centerline to the east and west. Amine slope
of 3H:1 V will be maintained adjacent to this gas pipeline. The pipeline will be located,
staked out and the 50 ft setback will be will be staked out prior to excavation.
Annual production is expected to average approximately 300,000 tons of aggregate,
which will be used as raw material for an on-site asphalt batch plant. It is estimated that
approximately 2,957,395 tons of gravel will be removed from the Stroh pit over a mine
life of 14 yeazs. The mine will be divided into two zones, a north and south zone. The
gravel is estimated to be approximately 12-ft thick in the northern part of the pit and
approximately 15-ft thick in the southern area. The north zone has been separated from
the south due to the presence of floodway and Preble's meadow jumping mouse (Zapus
hudsonius preblei) habitat in the northern area.
The north zone will not be mined until a technical revision is submitted to the division.
The decision not to mine this azea under this permit is based on the cost of backfilling the
ground to historic grade.
The south zone covers an azea of 69.5 acres and will be divided into 3 cells, each
averaging approximately 23.2 acres. An average of approximately 322,156 yd3 of
overburden will be extracted from each cell, totaling approximately 966,469 yd3.
Additionally, the south zone contains approximately 2,957,395 tons of gravel. Mining is
expected to proceed from east to west in the south zone.
Table 1 below shows the cells in the south zone, the approximate azea to be mined,
volume of overburden and quantity of gravel expected to be removed from each cell
within this zone.
Table 2 below shows the approximate azea to be mined, volume of overburden and
quantity of expected gravel removal from each cell in the north zone.
