-3-
SITE CONDITIONS
The site 15 failow agricultural iand located approximately
2 miles southeast of Hayden, Colorado as shown on Fig. 1. The ground
surface slopes downward to the southeast with a relatively uniform
elevation differential of approximately 20 feet across the proposed
construction area. The truck dump, crusher and stockpile are Tocated
downslope from one another with the train loadout located across a minor
draw to the northeast. Abroad ridge north of the site will be cut by
the haul road and railroad spur alignments. The Dry Creek drainage
system, located to the south and west, will be crossed by the railroad
spur.
Vegetative cover consists of light wheat stubble and weeds.
• Considerable surficlal cracking, apparently the result of shrinkage, was
noted at most Cast hole locations. The ground surface is relatively
firm with a light gravel cover and should not impede mobilization of ~ ;{
construction equipment unless it were to become wet.
7
i
e
GEOLOGIC SETTING
. s
The Hayden Gulch coal handling facility is situated on a strongly
sloping (12$) south facing terrace escarpment. The escarpment con~fects
the nearly level valley floor of Stokes Gulch and Dry Creek with a
nearly level terrace surface located in the northwestern portion of the
site. A thin clayey gravel deposit from 2 to 3 feet thick was encoun-
tered in Exploratory Holes 20 and 21 located on the terrace surface. 3
•
;:~
a
:A
. -. :V'
