L
- 15 -
buildup of hydrostatic pressure in addition to the active pressure
should be considered. Surcharge loading should also be added.
INTERIOR FLOOR SLABS
The natural soils and claystone at the site possess erratic swell
potential and are capable of damaging slab-on-grade construction by
shrinking and heaving should they be subjected to change in moisture
content. The only positive method of preventing floor movement is the
construction of a structural floor with a void space beneath. The
following construction details are suggested to minimize potential
damage in the event of movement:
(1) All slabs should be separated from bearing members with a positive
• expansion Joint. i
(2) All slab bearing partitions should be provided with a positive
slip )olnt at the bottom of the partition to allow vertical move-
ment of the slab without affecting the upper structure.
(3) A minimum 4-Inch free draining gravel layer should be provided
beneath lightly loaded office or change house slabs to distribute
floor loadings. Greater thickness may be required in heavier
loaded nonstructural slab areas.
(4) Slabs should be adequately reinforced for the proposed use.
(5) Pos(tlve drainage conditions should be established to minimize
moisture infiltration adjacent to structures.
