StuJ~ Pfan Dtsigrt
• This phase helped WFU and DMG determine the mix of topsoil/subsoil cover which was placed
on the refuse disposal area and set a procedure for conducting statistical evaluation of the
revegetation success.
Test Plot Reclamation Plan
The test plot reclamation plan consisted of the following tasks.
Eight test plots, each 30 x 30 meters in size, were established and fenced in RP-1. Four of
these plots have northern exposure. The other four plots have southern exposwe. Figure 1
shows the location of these plots.
• Each set of the four test plots were covered with varying thicknesses of topsoiUsubsoil:
12-inch, 24-inch, 36-inch and 48-inch. All plots have 12-inches of topsoil cover. On the
12-inch cover plot, all of the material is topsoil with no subsoil. The other three plots have
12-inch, 24-inch, and 36-inch of subsoil under the 12-inches of topsoil. The test plots were
constructed from April to July 1990 concurrent with the reclamation of refuse disposal area
RP-1.
The following aze plot designations with associated cover depths as shown on Figure 1:
• S] - I2" Topsoil Nl - 12" Topsoil
S2 - 12/12" Topsoil/Subsoil N2 - 12/12" Topsoil/Subsoil
S3 - 12/24" Topsoil{Subsoil N3 - 12/24" TopsoiVSubsoil
S4 - 12/36" Topsoil/Subsoil N4 - 12/36" Topsoil/Subsoil
• A total of eight soil samples were collected on June 21, 1990 by WFU and analyzed for
characteristic pazameters. Four samples were collected on the north and south plots. Samples
were collected at the approximate center point of each plot and composited for each lift;
12-inch, 24-inch, 36-inch, and 48-inch. That is, all fow samples taken from the 12-inch
increment on each exposwe were composited (labeled as 1 foot lift), the three samples taken
from the 12-inch to 24-inch increment were composited (labeled as 2 foot lift), the two
samples taken from the 24-inch to 36-inch increment were composited llabeled 3 foot lift)
and the 36-inch to 48-inch sample was labeled as the 4 foot lifr. This was done for the north
and south test plots.
• The test plots were mulched with straw, and seeded with a rangeland seed drill to form a
crimped mulch. The seed mix used on the test plots is contained in Table 1.
