Study Plan Design
• The scope of work for the revegetation study consists of three phases as follows:
1. Pre-reclamation investigation;
2. Test plot reclamation plan; and
3. Post-reclamation investigation.
The first two phases were completed during discussions with DMG for design of the program and
construction of the test plots during the Summer of 1990. The following sections summarize the
issues associated with each phase.
Pre-reclamation lnvestigatinn
The following tasks and assumptions were agreed upon and completed before starting the RP-I
test plot reclamation with varying topsoillsubsoil cover thicknesses.
• One representative composite topsoil and subsoil samples were obtained on April 24. 1990
and May 2, 1990. respectively, by WFU (split sample analysis was conducted by D~[G on
the April 24, 1990 sample) from stockpiles and were analyzed for the following pazameters:
• Specific Conductance Organic Matter
Calcium Texture
_ Magnesium pH
' Sodium Phosphorus
• One composite sample of the coal refuse vvas obtained on April 24, 1990 by ~b~U (split
sample analysis was conducted by DMG on this sample) from the disposal area and was
analyzed for the following parameters in addition to those listed for topsoil/subsoil:
Exchangeable Sodium Percentage Boron
Selenium Sulfate Sulfur
Pyritic Sulfur Total Sulfur
Acidlbase Potential
• A "reference plot" with existing vegetation in the vicinity has been selected and fenced for
future reference. This is a sagebrush-wheatgrass reference area that is approximately 2.0
acres in size.
• Success criteria will be defined based on cover, woody plant density (number of woody plants
in unit azea), species diversity, and production (gm/m') as they relate to the vegetation in the
• reference plot. The success criteria will be consistent with DMG's Regulation. Sec-
tion 4.1 ~.8.
