Box 1240
Grand Junction, Colorado 81501
ATTN. Mr. Ed Settle
May 10, 1979
Re: 23 Road Pit
Grand Junction, Co,
Gentlemen,
Following is a report regarding the
Geology and Strata thickness of the 23 Road Pit, located west
of Grand Junction approximately 3 miles. The Pit is located in
the SW 4, NE 4, SE 4, Section 6; SE 4, SE 4, Section 6, T1N, R1W, Ute
P.M. and the W?, SW 4, SW y, Section 5, T1S, R1W, Ute P.M., Mesa
County, Colorado.
GENERAL GEOLOGY:
The 23 Road Pit is located within the
Colorado River Floodplain and deposition regime. The deposited
materials are basically a medium to well sorted, moderate to
poorly graded gravel, cobble and minor small boulder, peri-glacial
deposit. Zones of gravel, sands and silts exist in an erratic
fashion throughout the deposit.
The source of this aggregate is the upper
Colorado Ri1s~ Drainage, with the Elk Mountains, Gore Range and the
Sawatch Ranges being the principle source areas for this aggregate.
Examination of the aggregate indicates that the majority of the
parent rock type is a variety of granitic intrusive rocks, with
minor amounts of metamorphics being present. Some sandstone fragments
can be found, but these are usually reduced to sands during the crush-
ing operation.
The majority of the sands are derived from
the weathered sedimentary rocks which are present throughout the
drainage basin of the Colorado River.
2700 Highway 50 West P O Boz 1427 109 Rosemont Plaza P.O.
