Grading and Backfilling
The mining will leave no highwalls on the property. No acid forming or toxic materials are used
in the mining. There will be no auger holes, adits or shafts left on the property. The operator
will utilize concurrent reclamation in this operation.
The grading will result in a smooth ground surface on the eastern portions of the property
planned for pasture land, and in the proposed shoreline for the reservoir. The perimeter of the
reservior will be graded and revegetated to blend with the existing topography. Disturbance to
areas outside the excavation limits will be minimized to the natural vegetation conditions. The
grading will be completed with effort taken to minimize the amount of ground surface disturbed
while matching existing grades. Care will be taken to preserve existing trees and shrubs.
The shoreline will be backfilled to a 3H:1V maximum sideslope and will be concurrent with
mining, as material becomes available.
Topsoil
An abundance of lime soils and overburden is available for the backfilling and grading of the
eastern area. The reclamation operation will utilize topsoil and overburden stripped on-site.
The western half of the site contains 6 to 8 feet of lime soils.and overburden and topsoil that will
be stockpiled on-site. This material is from Great Western Sugar Company's abandoned
sediment settling areas. Sediment washed from sugar beets was deposited in these settling
basins. The sediment has been tested and is safe. Attachment E2 is a letter from the Larimer
County Health Department that states this. Attachment E3 is lab results from test done on the
sediment.
Water
Disturbance of the area will be done to minimize the effect on the prevailing hydrologic balance
as follows:
a) The operator shall comply with all applicable Colorado water laws.
b) The operator shall comply with all applicable Federal and State water quality laws and
regulations.
c) The operator shall comply with all Federal and State requirements for dredge and fill.
d) The operator shall regrade all sediment or siltation structures after mining is completed.
The operation will] not affect groundwater quality on or off site. The operator will comply with
all state groundwater quality standards.
Due to the absence of any pollutants used or generated in this mining operation, groundwater
quality monitoring is not proposed for this operation.
