~.•t United States Soil
~ Department of Conservation
Agriculture Service
RECOMMENDATIONS: The following are recottunendations for reseeding and reshaping
the mined area.
1) Following is the seed mix recommended fer revegetation of the site,
Species Variety Total PIS lbs./ac. Needed
Creasted Wheatgrass Nordan 0
Russian Wildrye Vinall 3 using broad-
Pubescent l+Rieatgrass Luna 6 cast method.
Yellow Sweetclover - 2
Plant in late fall just before the first snow, Seed bed should be well settled
and firm, but friable enough that seed can be placed at appropriate depth. Seed
bed should be reasonably free of weeds, Competitive stands of weeds that are
present before seeding must be controlled by shallow tillage or by herbicide.
Seed planted by the broadcast method shall be incorperated into the surface soil,
not to exceed a depth of 3/L: inches, by rakins, harrowing or other proven method,
2) Fertilizer is optional but recommended. If fertilizer is used apply
100 lb s, of nitrogen (N) and 80 lbs. of phosphorus (P205). The phosphorus should
be applied during seedbed preparation. The nitrogen can be applied the spring
following reseeding, The above rates are on a per acre basis,
3) Stockpile the top 12 inches of soil, Put at least 6 inches of topsoil
back r+n the disturbed area before reseeding,
4) In rPClaiming the mined area all slopes should be regraded no steeper
than a 3:1 slope and preferably to a 6:1 slope,
$) On slopes of j:l and greater a straw mulch should be applied at a rate of
5000 lbs./acre. Mulching should follow fertilizing and seeding. Straw shall
not be musty, moldy, decayed or caked or otherwise of low quality, Straw shall
he free of weeds and viable seeds. At least 50~ of the straw, by weight, shall
be 10 inches or more in length.
