Powers Elevation InC. OIL WELL ELEVATIONS-LOCATIONS
EN VIRONMENTALARCHAEOLOGICAL SERVICES
P.O Bo. 2812
Denver, Cobreoo 802012812
• Phone 303/3212217
TM Free 1~800~B2d~2550
1.0 MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
Peabody Coal Company (Peabody), on June 5, 1987, issued
Purchase Order 16180-0260 to Powers Elevation, Inc. (Powers)
to conduct a cultural resources inventory of the proposed
extension of the Seneca II coal mine, near Hayden, Colorado.
The project area included about 180 acres in the N1/2SW1/4
and SW1J95W1/4 of Section 6 and the W1/2NW1/9 of Section
7, T.SN., R.86W., Routt County, Colorado. It is located
in the Colorado Plateau physiographic region, on the west
edge of Twentymile Park, just south of the Yampa River,
and east of the Axial Basin.
The project is on land owned by the State of Colorado
_ and leased to Cyprus Minerals. The purpose of the survey
was to identify any significant cultural properties and
assess possible impacts to them, as part of Peabody's
permit application to the Colorado Mine Land Reclamation
Division (CMLRD). Powers' goal was to inventory the tract
and record and evaluate all cultural resources in a manner
acceptable to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)
of Colorado.
• Mr. James M. Brechtel, M.A., Powers District Archaeologist,
performed the survey on June 8-10, 1987. The project
area was examined, for the most part, by walking transects
spaced about 30 m apart. Some areas of steep cliffs could
not be walked, and other areas of thick brush were covered
by wider spaced transects. All cultural resources found
were properly recorded on Colorado Historical Society
site forms, and evaluated against the criteria for nomination
to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as
spelled out in 36 CFR Part 60.4.
One isolated find was recorded during the survey. It
is a chert flake, resulting from some prehistoric lithic
tool making activity. The isolate is not eligible for
the NRHP and no further archaeological work at this location
should be necessary.
Because of the rugged terrain of the area surveyed, the
potential for unrecorded cultural resources is very low.
The proposed project should not adversely effect any signif-
icant cultural sites, and it is therefore recommended
that it be allowed to proceed as planned.
• 2.0 INTRODUCTION
On June 3, 1987 Powers Elevation, Inc. (Powers) was verbally
notified of a contract award by the Peabody Coal Company
(Peabody) to perform an archaeological survey of the Cyprus
A Subsidiary of Petroleum Inlormatlon Corporation
