z
Addition (ca. 120 acres) and 008 Pond location (ca. 61.1
• acres) at their Seneca II mine site near Hayden, Colorado,
under Purchase Order 16180-0260, issued June 5, 1987.
The project includes a total of about 180 acres in the
N1/2SW1/4 and SW1/9SW1/4 of Section 6 and W1/2NW1/9 of
Section 7, T.5N., R.86W., Routt County, Colorado, illustrated
on the USGS, Milner, 7.5', 1971 topographic quadrangle
map (Figure 1).
The project area will be an extension of the Seneca II
__ coal mine. The 008 Pond will include the construction
of a sediment control dam. The Cyprus Addition is part
of a mine plan change. The purpose of the archaeological
survey was to locate, record, and evaluate all cultural
resources in this area. If significant resources were
discovered, this report will discuss future work recommenda-
tions.
The field work was conducted by Mr. James M. Brechtel,
- M.A., Powers District Archaeologist, on June 8, 9, and
10, 1987. The work was performed under Colorado Permit
No. 87-1. All field notes and photograph negatives from
this investigation are on file at the Denver office of
Powers. The report was written by Mr. Brechtel and Paul
D. Friedman of the Powers Denver office.
The project is on land owned by the State of Colorado
and leased to Cyprus Minerals. The investigation meets
the requirements of the SHPO, as published by Colorado
Historical Society (1986) and should allow for the consider-
ation of the effect of the mine extension on cultural
resources in the new permit application to the CMLRD.
If sites were found which appear eligible for nomination
to the NRHP, this report will suggest methods of mitigation,
after consultation between Powers and the SHPO and CMLRD.
3.0 ENVIRONMENT
The project area is situated within the broad Colorado
Plateau physiographic region. It is located west of the
Park Range, east of the Axial Basin, and south of the
Yampa River, in a region broadly characterized by moderate
geological downwarping. The survey area consists of a
series of steep, anticlinal ridges which strike generally
northeast-southwest, and dip eastward at 40o plus. Twentymile
Park, a broad, open area of low rolling terrain, adjoins
the survey area on the east. Several watergaps in the
anticlinal ridge system contain east flowing intermittent
tributaries of Fish Creek, which drains Twentymile Park.
Fish Creek is a first order tributary of the Yampa River,
which is some four miles north of the project area.
• Terrain in the survey area is rugged for the most part.
It is estimated that at least 708 of the 180 acres inventoried
