SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR SPALLIN6 LOAL FROM THE RIBS
I. The mining height will be reduced *_o ten feet with allow-
. antes for faulted or rolling geological conditions which
control the opening height. The opening height will be
increased for the construction of overcasts.
2. The entries will be oriented or the pillar shape and the
dimensions altered to optimize the angle of intersection
of the plane of the rib with the plane of the R~ajor coat
cleat. All such chanq_es will be done in consideration of
the overall effect on roof control.
3. Precariously hanq_inq pieces of rib coal will be barred
down before work in the area begins. Because of strong
jointing in the coal, the ribs will not be barred dewn as
a normal rib control procedure except, as mentioneg above,
if obvious potential hazards exist in a workine place.
4. When~consigered necessary by the mine management, addi-
tional lateral support may be installed; sucn as shot-
crete, bolts with bearing plates, wire mesh or timber
lagging.
5. Entry widths v:ill be cut twenty feet or less. Roof bolts
will be installed on five by five (5 X 5) foot centers;
occasionally the center Dolts will be grea'er than 5 foot
centers but less than 6 foot centers (when using Fletcher
DDM-13 Dual Boom Roof Eglting Machine), and the outer
bolts will be kept as close as possible to the ribs. When
the distance between the outer bolts and *_he rib exceeds
five (5) feet, additional bolts or timber will be
installed.
6. All mine personnel will be properly instructed in the pro-
cedures of installing lateral support, working around
ribs, and barring down loose or precariously hanging coal.
All persenr,el will be rained to confine their vrork
activities to the center portion of the entries as is
prudently ~r re~sonaoly possible.
