SAFETY PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLING TEMPORARY SUPPORT contd. <br />i) Before any person proceeds inby permanently supported roof to in- <br />stall temporary supports, thorough visual examination of the unsup- <br />ported roof and ribs shall be made. If the visual examination does <br />not disclose any hazardous condition, persons proceeding inby perma- <br />nent supports shall do so with caution, and shall be within 5 feet <br />of a temporary support or permanent support, and shall test the roof <br />by the sound and vibration method as they advance into the area. <br />8. When installing permanent supports, temporary supports may be repositioned <br />if it is necessary to remove temporary supports before permanent supports <br />are installed. Such temporary supports shall be removed by some remote <br />means, or another temporary support shall be installed in such a manner <br />[hat the workman removing the support remains in a supported area. <br />9. Work such as extending line curtains or other ventilation devices, making <br />methane tests, or repairing mining equipment inby the roof bolts shall not <br />be done unless a minimivn of two temporary supports are installed. This <br />minimum is applicable only if [hey are within 5 fee[ of the face or rib <br />and the work is done between such supports and the nearest face or rib. <br />If work must be performed further than 5 fee[ from the face or rib, at <br />least two rows of temporary supports on no[ more than 5 foot centers will <br />be installed with all wrk being performed between such supports.
